Question 1

How many lumens does a two-car garage need?

Accepted Answer

About 20,000 lumens for a 20 by 20 garage, and roughly 29,000 for a 24 by 24. The figure is the floor area multiplied by 50.

Split it across four or more fixtures rather than one bright unit. Several spread fixtures remove the shadows that a single central light creates.

Question 2

Is 4000 lumens bright enough for a garage?

Accepted Answer

No. At 50 lumens per square foot, 4,000 lumens covers 80 square feet, which is about a fifth of a two-car garage. It is roughly one good fixture, and a two-car space needs four.

Question 3

Where should garage lights be placed?

Accepted Answer

In rows running front to back, evenly spaced, with the outer rows about a quarter of the width in from each side wall in a two-car garage.

That keeps the spread overlapping in the middle and the side walls lit. Keep anything within 18 inches of the door track clear so the door does not catch it.

Question 4

Are LED garage lights worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and there is no real competitor left. They draw the least power, reach full brightness instantly in the cold, and last far longer than fluorescent tubes.

The one characteristic to plan around is that the light is directional, so coverage comes from spacing several fixtures rather than from one powerful one.

Question 5

What color temperature is best for a garage?

Accepted Answer

4000K, with a CRI of 85 or better. That reads as clean white without going blue, and it shows colors accurately enough to match paint or trace a wire.

Warmer bulbs look yellow and flatten detail. Much cooler than 5000K starts to feel clinical and highlights every mark on the floor.

Question 6

Do garage lights need to be damp rated?

Accepted Answer

A damp rating is worth paying for if the garage is unheated, has a floor drain or gets hosed out. Condensation forms on a cold fixture on a humid day, and a damp-rated one is built for it.

In a dry, heated garage a standard indoor fixture is fine.
