It only seemed like Spring would never arrive. It’s finally here, and that means it’s time for homeowners to engage in that annual Spring tradition, Spring Cleaning. The biggest question with a job like this is where to start. It makes the most sense to organize your garage first before cleaning out the rest of the house. Here are just a few of the reasons why:
Start with a “win.”
Your garage is most likely the easiest space in your home to clean out. There’s no furniture and the threshold for cleanliness is far lower than the rest of the house. Pull the cars out, sweep out the dust and salt residue accumulated over the winter, and clean out any cobwebs. You’re almost done!
It will take a bit of time to declutter your garage and go through things to see what you want to keep. However, that’s still a much lighter task. Once you’re finished, you’ll have gathered some momentum and confidence that will help you finish the job in the rest of the house.
It’s a cool job. Literally.
Even with temperatures rising, your garage is a relatively cool place to be in the Spring. Inside temperatures can still be leveling out. You’re not using your furnace or your air conditioner, just the radiant air coming through the windows. That can take a while before it gets comfortable enough to work inside. Particularly if you’re working on an upper floor, it can get a little heated inside.
By contrast, your garage is open to the air outside, which is at its mildest setting of the year. Even if there’s a Spring shower while you organize, you’ll be able to keep working without breaking a sweat or shivering. And even though you’re technically inside while you organize your garage, you’re a lot closer to “nature” being right outside the open garage door.
Create needed space when you organize your garage.
The biggest advantage of starting your Spring cleaning with organizing your garage is the creation of space. Especially space for the things inside you’ll want to store in the garage. If you go into this with a bit of strategy you’ll have space already set aside for items you find inside. Namely, the items that you won’t give away or throw out, but no longer use on a daily basis.
