How many coats of epoxy do you need on a garage floor?
A properly installed garage floor typically gets at least two coats: a base coat that bonds to the prepped concrete and a topcoat that provides the durability, color, and finish. Some systems add a third layer, like a clear urethane or polyaspartic topcoat, for extra chemical and UV resistance. More coats generally mean more protection against hot tire pickup, chemical stains, and everyday wear, but the number of coats matters less than proper surface prep between them. A thick topcoat over concrete that wasn’t ground and moisture-tested first will still fail early, while a well-prepped two-coat system can outperform a poorly-prepped three-coat one.
